The Ecranisation of Novel to Film REFRAIN

Refrain is a novel by Winna Efendi which adapted into the film. In the story, a cheerful girl, Niki, relates what she wants to achieve in her life as a teenager with her bestfriend, Nata and Annalise. The story explained how strong their friendship when the feelings called love wants to break their friendship. This story is able to make the readers feel inspired about what the main character have done in the story inside. The interest thing about this story is able to resurrect us not to despair if easy, wanted to achieve a dream. This story gives some moral value that people can apply in real life.

Ecranisation is a theory adaption of film which means the process of transformation sustained contraction, enhancement, and modification by some variations. Bluestone (1991) believes that the film is independent, free to add that new ending or to leave several characters on the cutting room floor. Each film is analyzed by comparing novel and shooting script and then viewing the film with script in hand. Alterations are carefully studied in light of a broad knowledge of literature and motion picture history, and extensive research is in evidence on every page. The Ecranisation which people called as theory adaptation caused by the popularity of a literary work. The best seller novel is a good object to adapt into a film. It becomes a reference to create the success as the kind of diversion from novel to film. A one of novel which adapted to film is “Refrain” by Winna Efendi.

 Analyzing by Ecranisation Theory

A.    The Contraction :

a.       There is no scene when Niki liked Nata’s brother, Danny.

Nata has an older brother named Danny. Danny describes as cool guy. It is so different from Nata who Niki knows as a nerd guy. According to the novel, Niki gives more attention to Danny. She always snoops into Danny’s business. But in the film, Niki doesn’t love Danny.

b.      There is no scene when Danny dating his girlfriend at the night.

Danny surely got the label of ideal boyfriend from Niki. Sometimes, Danny cares to Niki also. But, the fact that Niki must realize is Danny has a girlfriend. According to the novel, Niki often see Danny and his girlfriend dating at the night. But in the film, it doesn’t explain that Danny has a girlfriend or not.

c.       There is no scene when Annalise get depressed because of she really miss her mother.

Annalise describes as a daughter of international public figure. She often moves to another country. Her parents got divorce and she decided to follow her mother. But, her mother is busy, so she leaves Annalise for her business. According to the novel, Annalise get depressed because she really miss her mother. She didn’t go to school and spend her time to draw her mother’s face on canvas. But in the film, it doesn’t show how depression Anna when she miss her mother.

d.      There is no scene of the friendship between Niki’s mother and Nata’s mother.

Niki’s house is near from Nata’s house. Their mothers are close friend. Sometimes, Niki’s mother brings Niki to visit Nata’s house. According to the novel, it tells how intents the conversation that Niki’s mother and Nata’s mother talk about. But in the film, it doesn’t show the friendship of both of them.

e.       There is no scene of the first impression between Niki and Nata from their childhood.

Niki is a charming girl while Nata is a bashful boy. They met when their mothers leave them for doing the conversation. According to the novel, it shows what an awkward situation when they don’t know each other. But in the film, it doesn’t explain the first impression of both of them.

B.     The Enhancement :

a.       The scene when shopkeeper wants to take a picture of Annalise.

Annalise eats at the canteen. She thinks of her mother. In the novel, Niki and Nata come to her and ask her to run away from school. But, according to the film, there is an addition scene when the shopkeeper tries to make her smile by taking a picture of her.

b.      The scene when Niki cleans up the window-pane.

Niki, Nata, and Annalise ran away from school. As a consequence, the headmaster gives a punishment for them to clean up the car. In the novel, Nata and Annalise promise if they don’t repeat same mistakes while Niki feels uncertain to do it. But, according to the film, there is an addition scene when Niki get double punishment, to clean up the window-pane for the headmaster.

c.       The scene when Nata got bullying from the audience while he performs on the stage.

Niki asks Nata to sing a song on Independence Day. Nata feels so nervous when he performs on the stage. In the novel, the audiences give a support for Nata while he waits for Niki. But, according to the film, there is an addition scene when the audiences mock Nata while he haven’t already to perform. But when Niki comes, the audiences start to support Nata.

d.      The scene when Helena said that Niki is more popular than her.

At the prom night, Niki must realize that Oliver, her boyfriend come with Helena. It hurts her so much. In the novel, Niki is angry to Oliver. But, according to the film, there is an addition scene when Helena gives statement that she is envy of Niki because Niki is more popular than her.

e.       The scene when Niki visits Nata to Austria.

Nata becomes the famous singer in Austria. In the novel, Nata performs on the stage in Austria, sings a special song that inspired by Niki. But, according to the film, there is an addition scene when Niki visits Nata to Austria and she sits on the chair of the audience.

C.     The Modification :

a.       Advice in the morning

Niki woke up late in the morning. She hasn’t prepared herself for go to school. According to the novel, Niki got a suggestion from her mother about her attitude when she was ready to go to school while according to the film, Niki got a suggestion from her assistant to eat before go to school.

b.      Listen to the music

Annalise felt headache, so she decides to go to UKS. Annalise meets Nata who always spend his rest time in UKS. According to the novel, Nata gives a half part of headset to Annalise for listen to music together while according to the film, Nata wears the headset by his own self then he sing these song to makes Annalise guess what song that Nata plays on his phone.

c.       Annalise’s partner date

Annalise has in relationship with Nata’s brother, named Danny. In the graduation party, their school held a prom night. According to the novel, Danny asks Nata to beome a partner date of Annalise because it was impossible for him to come while according to the film, Danny comes to the prom night with Annalise.

d.      News of Annalise’s mother cancellation

Annalise was happy to hear that her mother will come to Indonesia. Annalise, Nata, and Niki run away from school to pack up her. According to the novel, Annalise gets the news from her aunt that her mother canceled her coming in the airport while according to the film, Annalise gets this news in the taxi.

e.       Niki’s profession

When Nata’s dream is become a singer and Annalise wants to be a photographer, Niki still doesn’t know what she is going to be. According to the novel, after a several years, Niki becomes a teacher while according to the film, Niki becomes a designer.
